No matter what communication skill I’m helping people with, I always teach people the pleasantly interested news anchor face. It’s the smallest investment with the biggest return. If you just think about what you want the other person to know, make sure your face matches that truth. You won’t look like a big clown, or Pollyanna, or anything other than that you are listening.
I developed these rules several years ago to help me live in a way that honored God. My rules are not spelled out in the Bible, though they very much reflect my understanding of Biblical principles and practices.
Integrity is gritty – it is hard, it takes effort, it’s often a chore. And integrity is a never-ending process: it takes a lifetime to build, yet mere moments to destroy.
People want to follow leaders who present themselves as they truly are, not as they believe others want them to be.
This global pandemic doesn’t have to wreck your church, but it will reveal your church’s latent leadership strengths or weaknesses.
Treat people like they’re more than their body parts. Don’t be flaky. Practice being kind and loving even to people you think don’t deserve it. Don’t draw too much attention to yourself.
I think the church could and should offer a different kind of space: a space that welcomes authentic selves, wounds and all.
