Thanksgiving 2014

Lord, there’s no question,
        life has been hard this fall;
and too few words spoken,
        too many days – just finish.

My body was not ready to begin,
        surgery too recent;
too many classes walking,
        too much instruction lost.

Mother was not strong enough,
        surgery denied, too afraid;
too much life left –
        unlived.

Move-in to help just in time,
        surgery after a stumble, fall;
too busy to keep up,
        no time to settle in.

Now at semester’s end,
        papers, exams, final edits;
too frenetic for thought,
        deadlines looming.

I look back and consider,
        too few words spoken;
and a God still ever present,
        not dependent on my rhetoric;
or my time spent in prayer,
        me keeping my part.

I am grateful for many things,
        too many to list this year;
and only one thing that matters:
        your faithfulness, Lord,
        your faithfulness.

Amen
