A Prayer for Teachers (June 2013)
Lord, this year we have seen afresh
our debt to teachers,
at schools named Sandy Hook,
Plaza Towers, and Briarwood.
So we are reminded, Lord,
of what happens every day.
What teachers have always done
and will always do for students.
Giving their lives, one day at a time,
one year after another.
So Lord, we pause to thank you
for these who love children;
and to pray your protection
over these gathered here today.
Thank you Lord for these teachers
eager to hone their skills,
to retool their imaginations,
and restock their provisions.
Thank you Lord for these teachers
who are devoted to their students.
Teachers for whom teaching is not
just another way to get a paycheck.
Lord, please grant them the rewards
only teachers can experience:
Fleeting moments when they see
students’ eyes suddenly light up.
Days when the discussion becomes more
than just another discussion.
And when that student (you know who),
discovers that he can succeed.
God bless these teachers.
Guard them from cynicism,
the downfall of many a great teacher.
Save them from giving-in to the system,
and just punching a time clock.
Motivate them to become the teacher
who inspired them to be a teacher.
Grant them vision from time to time,
to see the difference they make.
Immunize them from petty,
misinformed criticism.
God grant these teachers
to see the greatness of their work;
and seeing the greatness,
not be overwhelmed.
Amen
