God Talks About Sex, and So Should We

Many Christians have their beliefs about sex formed by culture, maybe because it is so loud and insistent on what they think is the way to live. But I also wonder if some of the problem is that church leaders do not share what God says about sex. I know that it is an awkward subject at times – awkward for preachers, teachers, and parents, and awkward for teens, singles, married couples, and the older Christians among us.

But God actually has a lot to say about sex. And it is much easier to say, “Here is what God says,” than, “Here is what I think about sex.” God created us and knows us. He is a real God who understands real people living in a real world.

So here are five things God says about sex.

In Gen. 2, a man and woman leave their families and create one of their own. The two become one flesh. That is sex. Sex unifies a husband and wife. Two becoming one. That is why marriage and sex are connected. God designed sex to bring us together and express that closeness.

In Prov. 5, God talks about enjoying your wife. Being satisfied. For all of your time together. In Prov. 30, sex is described as so amazing that it’s even hard to understand.

In 1 Cor. 6, God even explains the Christian worldview of sex. Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. Sexual sin is sin against our own bodies. When you bring others into your marriage, it not only comes between you and your mate, but it also involves the Holy Spirit.

God even speaks about forgiveness for sexual sin. Psalm 51 is David’s story of sin, forgiveness, and redemption.

In 1 Cor. 7, God even gives practical advice for resisting temptation in our marriages. As Christians, our bodies belong to our mate and not to ourselves. We are not to withhold sex from our mates unless it is for spiritual reasons. Even then, only for a short time. This is so our mates will not be tempted.

God created us and gave us the gift of marriage. He made us in such a way that it is enjoyable and connects us to our mates in physical, emotional, and spiritual ways. He reminds of our Christian ethic concerning sex and gives practical advice. He even forgives us when we fail.

Thank you God for the gift of sex in our marriages.
