Shhhhh!

As I was suffering from writer's block in preparation for this article, I reflected on questions I customarily process when preparing to write for the faithful readers of the CHARIS blog. Some questions I pondered were:

  1. What is the social climate that leaders must be mindful of?

  2. In what way can I make a positive contribution to leaders by writing?

  3. Is there a crucial, perhaps controversial, truth or conversation that must be brought to our attention?

As I reflected on these and other questions, ideas and concepts were scarce. Of course, there are new, innovative approaches to leadership and ministry that should be considered. There are social ills that continue to plague our communities, which must be addressed. There are countless issues, topics, and concerns that must be highlighted in order to relevant.

Then it dawned on me! Leaders are constantly researching new methodologies, studying new themes, observing society, troubleshooting an issue, and doing other leadership type things, but how often do leaders practice this one important element to their holistic health? In a hyperactive society, how often do we create space for silence? There are so many voices begging to be heard and ears who are hungry to listen to the thoughts that roll off of our tongues. There is always a crisis to respond to, but when do we ever tell the world and our minds, "Shhh"?

So turn on soft meditative music. Shut off everything else (or put everything in silent mode). Close your eyes, inhale and exhale deeply three to five times, and sit in silence.

Shalom!
